Jumhooree Party leader, Qasim Ibrahim has been appointed as its parliamentary group leader.

The ruling coalition partner has five representatives in the 19th parliament.

While the Maamigilli constituency MP has been appointed as the PG leader, Dhangethi constituency MP Mohamed Nazim has been appointed as the deputy.

Qasim was elected speaker towards the end of the 18th parliament tenure, and Kinbidhoo constituency MP Abdulla Riyaz - who was elected to Thimarafushi constituency in the 19th parliament- had been JP’s parliamentary group leader.

Qasim was nominated for the speaker post for the incumbent parliament term, but suffered a humiliating defeat against main ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) leader, former President Mohamed Nasheed. Nasheed was elected with 67 votes, while Qasim received just 17; the parliament comprises of a total of 87 members.

The newly elected parliamentarians were sworn in on Tuesday night.
