Hulhumale Magistrate Court has remanded the man who was arrested for sexually assaulting two children, by 12 days.

Media official at the Maldives Police Service (MPS), confirmed this to RaajjeMV.

On Sunday, MPS revealed that the 19-year-old was arrested for sexually assaulting a six-year-old and an eight-year-old.

The Ministry of Gender, Family and Social Services has also confirmed that they are looking into such a case.

This comes at a time there has been an alarming increase in sexual assault against children. As such, ministry statistics revealed that there were 22 cases of sexual assault against children reported in April alone.

While the 19-year-old was arrested under a court order in the late hours of Saturday, a video clip of the man has since been circulating in social media. The video in question shows him being publicly humiliated by some individuals. He was stripped down and forced to walk on the streets of Hulhumale.

Police have since appealed to the public, to not make own decisions in regard to any crimes, noting that it will obstruct their investigations.
