The Elections Commission of the Maldives (EC) has forwarded a request to the Ministry of Finance, requesting to release political party funds.

Spokesperson Ahmed Akram revealed that they have sought from the ministry to provide funds to local political parties that had 10,000 members or more registered by the end of 2018.

This year, state has allocated a total of MVR 26.2 million as funds for political parties.

Out of the total, main ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) is to receive MVR 12،809،191, ruling coalition partner Jumhooree Party (JP) is to receive MVR 2،059،960, opposition Progressive Party of the Maldives (PPM) is to receive MVR 9،377،167 and Maldives Development Alliance it to receive MVR 2،031،754.

This year, EC will be releasing funds to these four parties which had over 10,000 registered members by 28 November 2018.
