Attorney General denies corruption allegations

Attorney General Riffath said he has never asked for illicit enrichment nor benefited from corrupt deals in his career

Attorney General Ibrahim Riffath has denied claims that he had attempted to take bribes on the Deebaaja case.

The Supreme Court recently ordered the state to pay MVR 348 million to Dheebaajaa Investment for compensation over an agreement violation.

In a tweet on Saturday, Attorney General Riffath said he has never asked for illicit enrichment nor benefited from corrupt deals in his career and that he left his private practice to serve the people.

“I always strive to discharge my duties honorably. Allegations of corruption made against me are untrue. I will protect public coffers from corruption.”

Dheebaajaa signed an agreement with the President Mohamed Nasheed’s administration in 2010 to develop transport services in the northern province, but the new administration of President Mohamed Waheed terminated the agreement in 2013.

While Civil Court ruled in Dheebaajaa’s favor, the state claimed that the company had violated their agreement and appealed in 2015, resulting in High Court overturning the lower court’s verdict.

Supreme Court has stated that the state had appealed to High Court after the specified deadline. In response, the state attorney said that the reason for the delay is due to the Civil Court giving them the trial report late and due to the irresponsibility of the state attorneys at the time.

The apex court stated that High Court had violated procedures by accepting the appeal after the deadline and therefore overturned its verdict and ordered the state to pay Dheebaajaa MVR 348 million.
