Husnu Suood summoned for SC questioning on Wednesday

The Supreme Court has summoned former attorney general Husnu Suood for questioning over recent statements he made to local media.

Suood, who currently sits as chief on a presidential inquiry commission into murders and ‘enforced’ disappearances, has been summoned to the apex court for 1:15pm.

In an interview with RaajjeTV on Monday, Suood said he does not trust the current Supreme Court bench, and that all sitting justices should be dismissed.

The Supreme Court announced their investigation to Suood’s claims on Tuesday, having only stated that the investigation relates to ‘contempt of court’.

In the interview, Suood criticized the Supreme Court for penalizing members of the Elections Commission of Maldives in 2013, ahead of a presidential vote, on allegations of contempt.

The Supreme Court, which is constitutionally mandated to be the highest authority in administering justice in the Maldives, has achieved notoriety for taking initiative to investigate matters of ‘contempt’ against it.

The court has on several occasions penalized members in the legal profession and revoked their licenses, as well as barred local media organizations from judicial proceedings, on these grounds.
