Four of the 31 women who ran in Saturday’s parliamentary election have won in their constituencies.

Two of the women did not serve as MPs previously and all four are members of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).

Preliminary results show that North Galolhu MP Eva Abdulla and Addu Meedhoo MP Rozaina Adam have been re-elected and that Hisaan Hussain won the Thulhaadhoo seat and Jihan Mahmood won Hinnavaru.

MDP leader and former President Mohamed Nasheed has raised concern over the lack of female representation in parliament, local councils, company boards, and in ministerial positions.
