Businessman Abdulla Jabir has won the Kaashidhoo seat in the parliamentary election, after losing in the primaries.
Jabir went to the Supreme Court after losing to Abdulla Riffath in the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) primary election, and won his case to allow those defeated in the primaries to run as independents in the elections.
Preliminary results of Saturday’s parliamentary election show that Jabir won with 651 votes and MDP candidate Riffath received 628.
Jabir is the special envoy of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and was the MP for Kaashidhoo constituency in the 17th parliament. He lost the seat to incumbent Vice President Faisal Naseem in the 18th parliamentary election.
Jabir has pledged to develop Kaashidhoo into a modern city if elected.
