Interim results of the parliamentary election show Jumhooree Party (JP) leader Qasim Ibrahim being re-elected as the Maamigili MP.
The interim results show that Qasim, one of the leaders of the government coalition, received 68.63% of the votes.
Main ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)’s candidate Ali Ameez is in second place with 29.41% of the votes.
Qasim was elected as parliament speaker on 1 November 2018, after the resignation of speaker Abdulla Maseeh Mohamed. He won with 62 votes against Fonadhoo MP Abdul Raheem Abdulla.
While JP is part of the government coalition, Qasim had announced his decision to support candidates of the opposition after MDP decided to contest all the seats in the parliamentary election.
Interim results show that MDP candidates are winning an overwhelming number of the seats.
