Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has stated that they will not be involved in any efforts to delay the upcoming parliamentary election.
At a press conference on Sunday, MDP’s deputy secretary general Afshan Latheef said that the opposition has always tried to delay and influence elections, but that the main ruling party will not join any such efforts.
Afshan said that the history of the opposition parties show that have always worked to delay elections until they can guarantee a win, adding that MDP supports the Elections Commission (EC)’s decision to stop such attempts and urges them to hold the parliamentary election on the announced date.
President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has also said that he is remaining vigilant over reports of attempts to delay the parliamentary election and that such behavior was typical during the previous government of Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM).
