Receiving reports of attempts to delay parliamentary elections: EC
EC has completed 99 percent of the elections preparations
If there is to be a delay MVR 20 million more will be spent

Elections Commission has been receiving reports of possible attempts to delay the parliamentary elections and it is fully prepared, states Elections Commissioner Ahmed Shareef.

Shareef told press on Sunday that there are no legally mandated reasons to delay the elections, scheduled for 6 April, adding that they are '99 percent prepared.'

He further said that they have given contesting candidates the time frame as legally mandated and that EC does not have to take responsibility for some candidates not being able to campaign.

There are no such cases in court, he further revealed.

Shareef went on to highlight that the commission has spent a hefty amount for election preparations and that it is not required to delay the elections just because a particular party is not prepared enough for it.

“MVR 20 million more will be spent if we were to delay the elections” said Shareef.

While reports have surfaced that the opposition is attempting to delay the elections, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih had also stated that the government is cautious of these reports and that they will not be given the opportunity to hinder in the election process.

Parliamentary elections will be held as per scheduled, President Solih said on Sunday.
