Former President Abdulla Yameen is manipulating Jumhooree Party (JP) leader Qasim Ibrahim through lies and deceit, says former President Mohamed Nasheed.
Speaking at Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)’s campaign event in Vilifushi on Saturday, party leader Nasheed said that even though Yameen has taught Qasim to ‘dance to his tune,’ the average citizen does not want to see his oppressive regime return.
Qasim, who is one of the four leaders of the government coalition, has decided to work with the opposition coalition, led by Yameen, in the parliamentary election.
After main ruling party MDP announced its decision to contest all the parliamentary seats in the upcoming election, Qasim accused MDP of violating the agreement to distribute the parliamentary seats within the parties of the government coalition.
Yameen was jailed on February 18 for attempting to bribe witnesses in the money laundering case against him. The High Court ordered his release last Thursday, right after changing the judges’ bench. Nasheed said that issuing a verdict after switching judges mid-trial is unheard of in other countries.
