Maldives unicameral Parliament has on Wednesday passed to raise salaries for city councils.
35 out of the 38 present members had voted in favor of passing the motion at Wednesday’s sitting. Two members had abstained from voting.
The two members are MP for Kudahuvadhoo constituency Ahmed Amir and north-Fuvahmulah constituency MP Ali Shah.
Parliament’s financial committee had approved the motion bringing an increase to city council salaries on the 18th of March with the votes of all four members present. They are north-Kulhudhuffushi MP Abdul Ghafoor Moosa, Thimarafushi MP Mohamed Mustafa, south-Thinadhoo MP Abdulla Ahmed and north-Fuvahmulah MP Ali Shah.
MP Shah proposed to allocate the salaries at MVR 40,000 for the Mayor, MVR 35,000 for the Deputy Mayor and MVR 30,000 for members.
President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih in December ordered to return the powers and responsibilities taken from the City Councils.
This comes at a time the People’s Majlis is seen to be ignoring state submitted bills. As such, coalition partner Jumhooree Party members are observed to be against passing the bill to empower presidential inquiry commissions.
