President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has said that he had no choice but to establish the inquiry commissions on murders and corruption.

The President said this on Sunday while speaking at the campaign event for MDP candidate Ali Riza in Sh. Milandhoo.

At the event, President Solih said that the commissions were established to fulfill his pledges but that he has not received support from parliament to provide legal authority to the commissions.

President Solih said that the independent institutions had failed to properly investigate cases during the previous administration of President Abdulla Yameen and had instead used their authority to target specific individuals.

He said that these institutions have lost public trust and that there would have been no need to establish the presidential commissions if they had fulfilled their responsibilities.

He also said that he will receive more support from parliament if MDP had majority, and urged voters to elect a candidate of the main ruling party.

As part of his two-day trip to Shaviyani Atoll, President Solih has visited four islands and met with the local councils and organizations.
