Parliament committee to summon senior Fenaka officials

The opposition accused the government of firing 80 employees without valid reason

The parliament’s government oversight committee will be summoning senior officials of public utility company Fenaka.

The decision was made over accusations made by opposition Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) that numerous Fenaka employees are being dismissed.

The senior Fenaka officials will be summoned to the parliament on Tuesday, at 2pm.

The case was submitted by Vaikaradhoo MP Ali Arif, a member of the opposition coalition. He accused the government of dismissing the employees without a valid reason. Opposition members at the committee meeting claimed that 80 employees have been dismissed.

At the committee meeting on Monday, members of main ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) also approved the idea. Addu Meedhoo MP Rozaina Adam said that the current state of Fenaka needs to be looked into and that there have been rumors regarding its financial situation when the new government took over.

Some reports suggest that when the new government came to power, there was only MVR 80,000 in the Fenaka account. MP Rozaina said that the previous administration had unlawfully given people positions in the company for political reasons.

Some have claimed that former President Abdulla Yameen had hired many Fenaka employees for votes.
