Sri Lanka has beaten Maldives 2-0 in the group stage of the SAFF Women’s Championship 2019.
The two teams went head-to-head at Nepal’s Sahid Rangsala Stadium on Friday.
The Sri Lankan team showed an offensive play from the beginning of the match and took the lead with the first goal at the 40-minute mark.
Since the two defenders of the Maldives team were injured, some of the top forward players including Captain Fadhuvaa Zahir had been assigned to the defensive positions.
Captain Zahir showed an excellent play and managed to organize an offense but was foiled by the Sri Lankan goalkeeper.
Sri Lanka increased their lead with a second goal in the second half.
Coach Mohamed Athif said that they had been unable to achieve their goal of reaching the finals because of the injuries sustained by the players.
India had earlier beaten Maldives 6-0 in their first match of the SAFF championship.
