Ministry to launch swimming safety programme

The new standard was formulated after looking into Australia and New Zealand’s standards

Tourism Minister Ali Waheed has said that they will soon launch a programme for their new swimming safety standard.

At a press conference on Thursday, Minister Waheed said that the new standard was formulated after looking into Australia and New Zealand’s standards.

The programme, to be launched on March 27, is aimed at ministry officials and tourism industry professionals for the purpose of improving safety standards to prevent drownings.

Minister Waheed said that they have also decided to conduct inspections in Male’, Hulhumale’, and Villingili and change the current out-of-date safety laws.

Detailing their work, he said that permitted swimming areas will be designated in every island and that the programme will teach the public to be aware of the tide timings.
