The body of Hussain Simad has been handed over to his family and is now being taken by sea ambulance to his native island, Hithadhoo of Addu City.
The 39-year-old fisherman, who was reported missing, was found dead with severe injuries in Villingili island of Gaaf Alif atoll on Sunday morning.
Simad, who was married to a woman native to Villingili, was found dead in a boatshed in the island’s north.
The police handed over his body to the family after keeping him at the hospital for 13 hours while they investigate. A team from capital Male’ arrived in Villingili to help with the investigation.
RaajjeTV journalist Hussain Hassan cited witnesses saying that the body had multiple bruises, burn marks on his neck, and stab wounds in his eyes.
According to the family, Simad had received death threats over a robbery on a safari boat a few months earlier.
Noone has been arrested over the incident.
