Zaki had served as the Maldives ambassador to Malaysia, during former President Mohamed Nasheed’s administration.
In December 2011, Malaysia’s king Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah had awarded him the Dato’ title, the most highly regarded title in the country. It is awarded to prominent figures that have made significant social contributions.
He has also served as non-resident ambassador to Brunei, Indonesia and Thailand.
Zaki is also among those arrested for their involvement in then-opposition newsletter “Sandhaanu,’ and was sentenced to life in 2001. He was released in 2005, due to international pressure.
