The Waste Management Corporation (WAMCO) requires much overhaul but will not be in loss at the end of the current financial year, says managing director Adam Mohamed.

Adam told RaajjeTV on Sunday night that there have been clear signs of mismanagement in the WAMCO’s history and details of this will soon be announced in a press conference.

Adam said that while WAMCO is responsible for collecting, transporting, and destroying trash from homes and businesses in the ‘Greater Malé Area’, an average of 10,000 households consistently pay the company.

Households and offices are charged a fee for daily pickups, which should have made the company MVR 6.7 million, according to Adam; though he said WAMCO only made 1.5 million of this last year.

Adam also said that the company’s database needs to be compiled in compliance with their current operations, which he describes to be a hefty task but not one which cannot be accomplished within the year.

WAMCO has been solely responsible for waste management in the capital city, as well administrative divisions Hulhumalé and Villilingili, since April of 2017, private collectors have been banned since.

In 2017, WAMCO was audited to have an income of an uncorroborated MVR 21.8 million; the company’s former director Ibrahim Fuad has also had a case investigated against him by the Anti-Anti-Corruption Commission.
