The Local Government Authority (LGA) has decided to compensate councillors for lost wages during periods of suspension now declared unjustified.
LGA president, and Minister of Home Affairs, Imran Abdulla said on Thursday that he is ‘happy’ that councillors who were penalised will have their rights guaranteed to them.
Minister Imran earlier this week said that the government is working to restore the authority of local government councils and ensure that councillors penalised by the previous government are compensated.
Former president Abdulla Yameen’s administration had suspended the authority of city, atoll, and island councils, taking from them, their autonomy over resources in their jurisdiction, and centralising this authority under his government.
Several individual councillors and whole councils were suspended for publicly opposition Yameen’s policies.
