The Parliament Committee on National Security has approved the nominees forwarded by President Abdullah Yameen Abdul Gayoom for vacant positions in the board of Local Government Authority.

The board of the Authority was formed again following the amendments made to the Decentralization Act by the President. The Committee passed the nominees with over 90 percent approval.

Minna Rasheed, Ahmed Hassan and Amir Ali were the nominees sent in by President Yameen who all scored over 90 percent in the judging criteria.

In addition to these three members, the board consists of a Minister appointed by the President and Chief Executive Officer of LGA.

Prior to the amendments, LGA board consisted of nine members. Following the amendments, the President has the direct and unchallenged power to remove and appoint the Minister and CEO of the board. Additionally, the President will have the sole authority to nominate individuals to the board and the three members can only be dismissed by a no confidence vote taken in the Parliament. The President also reserves the right to decide on the compensation for board members. The board is appointed for a term of five years.
