Dhiggaru MP Faris Maumoon was notified on Thursday that the Prosecutor General (PG) has withdrawn the bribery charge against him.

Faris had been charged with bribing some of his fellow lawmakers into signing an impeachment motion against parliament speaker Abdulla Maseeh in 2017.

Faris was first arrested over the allegation on 18 July 2017.

At a court hearing on 12 March 2018, a secret witness presented by the PG, who is a parliamentarian, testified that Faris neither gave nor offered a bribe before he signed the impeachment motion, reversing his earlier claim. The witness stated that he signed the motion on the request of Faris’ father, former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom.

The last Crimainl Court hearing on Faris’ case was held on 13 March 2018.
