Former Vice President Adeeb
Adeeb's prison transfer was against doctor's recommendation: HRCM
Adeeb was taken to IGMH on 10 November 2018 for emergency treatment
The urology specialist recommended that Adeeb be transferred to his house for six to eight weeks

The correctional service’s decision to transfer former vice president Ahmed Adeeb back to prison is against the doctor’s recommendation, says Human Rights of the Maldives (HRCM).

HRCM said this in a press statement after evaluating a report filed at the commission after authorities suddenly transferred Adeeb to Maafushi Prison on January 2.

In the statement, HRCM said that Indhira Gandhi Memorial Hospital’s urology specialist recommended that Adeeb be allowed a transfer to house arrest for two months but that the correctional service returned him to prison too early.

Noting that the correctional service is required to follow the recommendation of doctors when dealing with convicts, under the prisons and parole act, HRCM highlights that Adeeb was taken to IGMH on 10 November 2018 for emergency treatment and that the urology specialist recommended that Adeeb be transferred to his house for six to eight weeks while he is being treated.

Therefore, the correctional service’s decision to transfer him to prison on January 2 is against the doctor’s recommendation, HRCM stated.
