A car being driven on the Sinamalé Bridge highway in Hulhulé island has combusted.

The incident was reported to have occurred at about 11:30pm on Monday, although rescue officers say that the fire had been quelled by the time they arrived on the scene.

Captain Ali Azim, of the Maldives National Defence Force, said that the car had required changing of engine oil for some time.

Azim said that though the engine had combusted, the incident was reported when the engine began to smoke.

No one was injured in the incident.
