Former Member of Parliament for Faresmaathodaa Constituency Ibrahim Muttalib has dished out advice to MDA Leader Ahmed Siyam Mohamed, calling on him not to be a bystander when friends are slain for political gains.

Speaking in the rally held in M. Kunooz, Muttalib had reflected on the current situation. He said that all those who had worked to bring this Government to power are now jailed. On top of that, Muttalib lamented that businesses were now being harassed as well.

Muttalib said that one must not be a bystander while friends were being slain and called on Siyam to be wary of this fact. Muttalib said that it was a high possibility that this Government will turn against Siyam, in the same manner as that of Qasim.

He added that Parliamentarians had brought in amendments to the Financial Act, to hasten development bills. Muttalib said that this must not be taken advantage of, in any case.

“One of the allegations against Qasim Ibrahim was a penalty of MVR 92 million, which Qasim does not have to pay. I believe that the Government is talking of this as they are in debt,” he said.

He stated that due to the changes to the Financial Act, the public has no inclination of exactly how much had been grafted from state coffers.

Muttalib said that back in 2008 there were stringent procedures for the country’s financial sector, including a transformation towards a public accounting system. Under Qasim’s leadership, Muttalib noted that there were severe procedures to ensure that the financials of the country were not tampered with. As such, he noted that then, loans cannot be taken unless the Parliament approved it. However, this has been changed.

“Today we don’t know the debt situation of the country. When we have to pay back. From which nation we took loans from. What the interest rate is. With the changes to the system, today the Government can deposit the loans and aid to other accounts,” Muttalib said.

He said he was forced to come on to the podium at Kunooz due to these factors.
