Acting Police Commissioner Mohamed Hameed has said he will discuss with the Prosecutor General (PG) on re-investigating the explosion inside the presidential speedboat during former President Abdulla Yameen’s tenure.

Speaking to the state media, Hameed said that there have been contradicting stories behind the incident and so he will discuss with the PG on whether to open an investigation.

He said he will begin the investigation if the PG approves, and that otherwise he will wait for the judiciary to give the go-ahead.

At the time of the incident, the President’s Office released a video of the explosion which showed flames coming out of the president’s speedboat after the blast. However, another video publicized recently did not show any fire.

At a recent press conference, Yameen’s former spokesperson Ibraim Muaz also claimed that he did not see any flames when he was on the speedboat at the time of the blast.

The explosion occurred on 28 September 2015 as Yameen and then First Lady Fathimath Ibrahim was returning to Male’ after concluding their Hajj pilgrimage. Yameen escaped uninjured but the former first lady had to be hospitalized.
