Yameen's presidential campaign: top donors revealed

RaajjeMV has found out some of the contributors to former President Abdulla Yameen’s election campaign.
The top donor to Yameen’s failed bid for re-election was Mohamed “Colonel” Nasheed, the leader of Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP).
Nasheed had donated MVR eight million for Yameen’s campaign while prominent businessman Mohamed Shaveed and Shimla Naseem donated MVR three million each.
While Nasheed did not deny his contribution to the campaign, he responded that he is a businessman who earns his money honestly and therefore he can give his money to anyone he wishes.
He emphasized that the money was acquired legally.
Shaveed and Shimla has declined to comment on their donations.
While President Yameen spent a total of MVR 22.5 million for his campaign, the aforementioned three donors had contributed MVR 14 million to Yameen. RaajjeMV understands that the rest of the MVR 8.5 million was donated by companies. Many state-owned companies have been accused of contributing to Yameen’s campaign.
After the end of the presidential election, Yameen’s Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) is now incurred with large amounts of debt and the police have frozen two of Yameen’s account containing MVR 100 million as part of an investigation.
