Former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom is not one of the ‘many’ people that should be held responsible for the Progressive Party of Maldives’ (PPM) current debt, says Maumoon Reform Movement’s deputy leader Aminath Nadira.

Nadira said this during an interview with RaajjeTV, adding that those who were given leadership of the party after Maumoon and his half-brother, former president Abdulla Yameen both contested for leadership, must take responsibility.

Nadira said in Tuesday night’s interview that former president Yameen had disrupted functioning of the state, depleted Maldives’ treasury, and completely suppressed authority of the parliament and independent institutions.

In this regard, Nadira described Yameen’s entire tenure to have been one of self-interest and had taken out several loans from businesses in the party’s name, which the now opposition party has to be responsible for.

Nadira said Yameen, and the Progressive Party of Maldives’ entire council must take responsibility for the dire financial situation the party is currently in.

The Maumoon Reform Movement was formed after former president Maumoon, who founded the Progressive Party of Maldives, was removed from its leadership through a Civil Court order.

The party’s leadership is currently in dispute at the Supreme Court.
