The National Disaster Management Center (NDMC) is not required to compensate for any damages, senior program officer Faroosha Ali has said.
Faroosha said this during an interview with RaajjeTV on Tuesday, adding that the ongoing distribution of funds is a symbolic form of assistance to aid citizens who have unfairly been victimized.
The senior programs officer further said that the NDMC has accepted the responsibility, out of its official mandate, for the good of citizens, factoring in Maldives’ traditions of generosity.
“First we want the people displaced to have a roof over their heads, so we gave them shelter, then we tried to find a way for them to feed themselves”, Faroosha said.
NDMC said last week that 62 households damaged in the recent flooding of capital city Malé, caused by heavy rain, have been given relief funds.
NDMC Project Director Hisaan Hassan said that the damages cost households MVR 1.3 million. The NDMC received claims for damages from a total of 210 houses. After assessment, the center decided to compensate 127 of them.
The capital city and islands around it experienced 223.5 millimeters of rain on Wednesday, December 5th; a record amount.
