Leaders of the Maldivian coalition government are to meet on Thursday to discuss and reach an accord on the conduct of parliamentarians aligned with them, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has said.
Having briefed journalists on his recent state visit to India and on the progress of his first 100 days in office, Solih said that the four leaders will meet and come to agreement on a number of other matters as well.
At Wednesday’s conference, Solih said he found it disheartening that despite having a majority in parliament, various bills that were ready for vote remained unpassed as the People’s Majlis went into recess last week.
“It is disheartening that despite having a majority, our coalition having the greatest number of seats, some members for whatever reason were unable to attend”, Solih said.
However, Solih answered a question about the unity within the coalition to say that he believes that they have thus far worked well together and is confident of the coalition’s longevity.
Thursday’s meeting is to be held amidst reports of discord within the coalition over how parliament seats are to be divided amongst the four parties.
The Maldivian Democratic Party, to which Solih President belongs, has said that it will contest for all 87 seats and is holding a primary election in January, while Jumhooree Party leader Qasim Ibrahim claimed his party could also secure any constituency ‘if so desired’.
