Members of the Progressive Party of Maldives have taken to the streets of capital city Malé to show support for former president Abdulla Yameen, who is at the police headquarters for interrogation.
Party members were to accompany Yameen on foot as he enters the headquarters, although the former president decided to use a car for transport due to ‘security reasons’ at the last minute.
While several supporters of Yameen’s party are now gathered near the police headquarters in capital city Malé, anti-corruption protesters have also gathered near the area.
The Maldivian Democratic Party organized a protest, reportedly aimed at 'reminding Yameen of his theft and corruption', and their supporters have been gathered outside their primary assembly site since Saturday morning.
The police is investigating how large amounts of money was deposited at an account Yameen had declared at the Elections Commission as the one used for campaign expenses.
On Friday, the Criminal Court had also ordered a freeze on accounts linked to him at the Bank of Maldives and the Maldives Islamic Bank.
While the former president maintains that any allegations of corruption and graft against him are false and cannot be proven, a case of MVR 22.5 million being deposited to an account linked to him ahead of September’s polls have also surfaced.
