The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has completed the tasks assigned to it under President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s first 100-day Agenda.

Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid revealed the completion of the tasks via twitter on Thursday.

The two tasks assigned to the Ministry under the President’s first 100-day pledges are:

  • Proposing to rejoin the Commonwealth of Nations, which President Solih forwarded on the 7th of December and
  • Seeking to expedite cases in the United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention as well as the United Nations Human Rights Commission.

Maldives became a member of the Commonwealth in 1982 but gave up its membership in October 2016 after the Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group deemed then President Abdulla Yameen’s administration of being guilty of violating human rights of his opponents. The Maldives was threatened of suspension if the situation did not resolve.

After the Parliament approved the decision, President Solih sent his letter of intent to rejoin the Commonwealth on the 7th of December to Commonwealth’s Secretary-General Patricia Scotland.

The Foreign Ministry further revealed that other significant work is underway after they completed the prioritized tasks assigned by the President.

Work to complete the tasks assigned to other ministries under the President’s first 100-day agenda is also proceeding full steam ahead.
