Former fisheries minister Dr. Mohamed Shainee has said that former vice president Ahmed Adeeb’s version of what had happened in the presidential speedboat blast incident was “very plausible”.

On 28 September 2015, an explosion went off in the presidential speedboat while then President Abdulla Yameen was inside. He was unscathed but first lady Fathimath Ibrahim was injured.

Despite Yameen’s vice president Adeeb denying having played any part in it, he and some others were convicted over the incident, even though the FBI said their investigation did not reveal any evidence that a bomb had caused it.

In a tweet on Friday, Shainee, who was also on the speedboat during the incident, said that he met with Adeeb after a long time to clarify “who tried killing me in the launch blast.” He added that Adeeb’s version is “very plausible.”

Adeeb, who is serving prison sentences totaling 33-years, is currently under house arrest due to health issues.

Shainee is a close associate of Yameen was also close to Adeeb before his arrest.

Shainee’s meeting with Adeeb comes less than 24 hours after Yameen gave him Progressive Party of Maldives’ ticket to contest in the parliament election without a primary.
