The State Trading Organization, Maldives’ state-run wholesale and retail company, has said that no food stocks were damaged in Wednesday’s flooding of capital city Malé.

The organization’s managing director Hussain Amru said that while several of their storage warehouses were affected by the flooding, their employees were able to keep stocks safe.

He said that the employees drained the water and were able to keep the warehouses from further flooding by barricading the entrance with bags of sand.

Amru further said that while they have not yet released any of the stock for export into out lying islands, there will be no shortage of food.

“There are food stores in the islands currently, our employees are well prepared. There might be a delay of two or three days but there will not be any shortage”, the managing director guaranteed.

Amru praised their employees and said that they are dedicated in service to the people; while several homes and businesses incurred damage due to immense flooding, caused by heavy showers, in Malé, most of the organization’s food stocks are stored at warehouses in Maafannu ward, which was most affected by the flooding.
