International human rights lawyer Jared Genser has met President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.
In a tweet on Friday night, Genser said it was an honour and a privilege to meet Maldives’ new President.
He also said that he was labelled an enemy of the state by the prior government of President Abdulla Yameen just three years before.

Jared Genser was part of the international team that represented former President Mohamed Nasheed during his trial on state terrorism charges. Nasheed was sentenced to 13 years in prison in March 2015, after being found guilty of ordering the ‘abduction’ of a judge during his presidency.
After his arrest, Genser had worked to free Nasheed and had been critical of Yameen’s government.
The United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention and its Human Rights Committee have declared that Nasheed’s conviction was unfair and violated international law.
After Yameen lost to President Solih in the election, Genser returned to Maldives on November 26 to be present at the hearing that saw the Supreme Court overturn Nasheed’s conviction.
