Parliamentarians have on Wednesday voted to extend the ongoing session until next Thursday.

The motion to extend the third, and last session, of the People’s Majlis passed with 70 votes in favour, with one present member voting against.

According to parliamentary procedure, the third session is to be held from 27th August to the end of November.

Three bills have been proposed by pro-government MPs this week; an amendment repealing age limits on presidency, and to amend the Goods and Service Act so as to slash taxes on sanitary products, and a law on the ‘legal profession’ that proposes establishment of a bar association.

Two of these bills have been passed, and the ‘legal profession’ act has been forwarded for parliamentary review.

Opposition MPs have also submitted two constitutional amendments, which are in committee review. The Majlis is also to deliberate on a motion to remove current Prosecutor General Aishath Bisham.
