Maldives Police Service (MPS) has said that it has not concluded the special operation begun on April 24, despite police officers noticeably missing from the streets on Saturday night.
MPS on Monday announced that it was conducting a special operation in the capital Malé City. It said that “more officers will be active” in Malé, adding that individuals “will be questioned and asked to collect samples in the investigation”.
While a number of officers were seen on the roads the past few days, officers were missing from the streets on Saturday night.
When RaajjeMV contacted the police to inquire whether the operation has concluded, police media official said that “the operation is still ongoing”, but did not reveal further on the matter.
The operation began a day after blogger and pro-democracy activist Yameen Rasheed was killed in a barbaric act. He was stabbed to death in the early hours on April 23.
Yameen’s family has asked the investigation and prosecution authorities, as well as the government to guarantee those that are responsible for his assassination faces justice, despite failing to ensure his safety when he was alive.
Also on Monday night, police officers had raided two homes and an office in the Mahchangoalhi ward of Malé. It was later reported that the raid was conducted after reports of a terror cell’s plans to attack the capital city.
