Dr. Abdulla Nazeer has been appointed as the Administrator of the Department of Judicial Administration (DJA).
He was appointed by the Supreme Court at a meeting on Wednesday.
Dr. Nazeer was a state minister at the education ministry in former President Abdulla Yameen’s administration and before that was the secretary of former President Mohamed Waheed’s cabinet.
The government coalition has pledged to transfer the power to appoint the Judicial Administrator to the parliament and sever the Supreme Court’s authority over the DJA.
Previous Judicial Administrator Hassan Saeed was dismissed on July 10 after being arrested for allegedly being involved with bribing Supreme Court justices, which had allegedly led to the apex court ordering the release of opposition leaders during former President Abdulla Yameen's administration.
After serving a prison sentence for fleeing his arrest, Saeed was released in early November after the Prosecutor General refused to appeal the Criminal Court's dismissal of the state bribery charges.
DJA is tasked with organizing, implementing, and overseeing all administrative matters of the judiciary. Its main tasks include, infrastructure development of the judiciary, repair work, facilitation of technology, human resource development, gathering and publishing statistics, hiring and firing and organizing and running all other administrative tasks.
