The no-confidence motion against Prosecutor General Aishath Bisham has been withdrawn.

South Thinadhoo MP Abdulla Ahmed withdrew the motion the same day he submitted, last Wednesday.

In the motion, MP Abdulla said that the PG had been biased and unfair in prosecuting lawmakers.

However, parliament’s secretary general Fathimath Niusha told news outlet Mihaaru on Friday that the MP had taken back the motion on the same day.

When contacted by RaajjeMV, MP Abdulla said he was too busy to talk. In a tweet a few moments later, he said that he withdrew the motion to make some amendments and re-submit it.

Bisham was appointed as PG in 2015 after the parliament voted to impeach then-PG Muhthaz Muhsin. Before her appointment, Bisham was then-President Abdulla Yameen’s legal advisor, and was previously the Attorney General.

The opposition had blamed her for prosecuting President Abdulla Yameen’s rivals during his tenure.

After opposition candidate Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s electoral win, the PG has withdrawn charges against political prisoners, released some of them, and requested that the Supreme Court review the cases of others.

The parliament has the constitutional power to appoint and remove Prosecutor Generals. However, the Supreme Court last year ruled that it has the final say in such matters.
