EC inquires on whom to address, when sending letters to 'leaderless' PPM
EC has stated that it does not recognize Yameen as PPM's leader
Former PPM leader Maumoon was removed from PPM in 2016

Elections Commission (EC) has requested Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) to state whom to address when sending letters to the former ruling party.

EC previously stated that it does not recognize the decisions made at the last PPM congress, where former President Abdulla Yameen was made party leader, stating that the party congress had violated procedure.

EC member Ahmed Akram told the media that they have asked the party to state who the addressee of the letters to the party should be.

In 2016, former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, then-leader of PPM, was removed from the party during a time of conflict within the party. A subsequent Civil Court order allowed Yameen’s faction of PPM to appoint the party’s chief advisor (Yameen) as the senior-most party member.

According to PPM regulations, the party’s chief advisor is the presidential candidate who gets elected to the presidency with the party’s ticket.

Yameen lost his position as chief advisor after completing his presidential term.
