Former deputy speaker of parliament Mohamed Nazim has returned to Maldives.

Speaking to the press at the Velana International Airport on Saturday morning, Nazim said he will be attending President-elect Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s inauguration ceremony.

He also said that he returned after almost three years abroad to join the opposition coalition.

Highlighting that he had been sentenced to prison during the current administration, Nazim said that he has returned to mark the end of the oppression of President Abdulla Yameen’s government.

He conceded that he had helped get President Yameen elected but said he had worked even harder to remove him and that he returned in order to work to secure Solih’s government.

When asked whether he would contest in the parliament election, he said he will make a decision after discussing it with the opposition coalition.

He also said that he will work alongside Dhiggaru MP Faris Maumoon. Therefore, it is likely that he will be joining the Maumoon Reform Movement.

Nazim, the former Dhiggaru MP, was sentenced to 25 years in prison by the Supreme Court on 6 April 2015 on corruption charges. He fled the country on 11 December 2015 while abroad on a medical trip.
