North Henveiru MP Abdulla Shahid has announced his decision to resign from parliament.
Speaking at a press conference, Shahid said that he will resign after the new administration is sworn in.
After serving five terms in parliament, Shahid said he will next be seen working in Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s government. It is rumored that he has been promised a position in the new cabinet.
Regarding his experience in parliament, Shahid said that he had never expected that MPs, including him and now-president-elect Solih, would be kicked out from the parliament building by security.
Shahid, as well as being a speaker, represented North-Henveiru and Keyodhoo constituencies in parliament. He was also a member of the committees that drafted the current ‘green’ Constitution and the earlier ‘blue’ Constitution.
At the press conference, Shahid thanked everyone in the constituencies he represented for allowing him to serve them for 25 years and expressed his hope in seeing more citizen involvement in the new parliament.
