Parliament passes to dismiss MP Riza as JSC representative
42 lawmakers voted in favor of dismissing MP Riza from the Commission, while 24 voted against it

Parliament on Monday passed to dismiss Ibrahim Riza as its representative at the Judicial Service Commission (JSC).

42 lawmakers voted in favor of dismissing the Guraidhoo constituency MP from the Commission, while 24 voted against it.

Following the vote, newly elected Speaker MP Qasim Ibrahim announced Riza’s dismissal as JSC member.

The motion to dismiss Riza from JSC was submitted by Vaikaradhoo constituency MP Mohamed Nazim. Submitting the motion, Nazim stated that Riza had failed to fulfill his constitutional obligations.

The motion further noted that Riza continued to represent private clients at court despite his position.

While MP Riza is accused of influencing the judiciary through JSC and violating procedures, he was given 15 minutes to respond to the allegations against him.

He denied acting against the Constitution and laws, using his post at the Commission.
