MPs to debate on motion to repeal anti-defamation law on Monday
The motion was submitted to parliament last month, by North-Henveiru constituency MP Abdulla Shahid

A parliament sitting is scheduled for Monday, where MPs will debate on the motion to repeal the anti-defamation law.

The motion was submitted to parliament last month, by North-Henveiru constituency MP Abdulla Shahid.

The law came into effect in August 2016, despite the multiple calls against it, by members of the ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM).

Submitting the motion to repeal it, MP Shahid emphasized that the law 'has to be abolished to protect constitutional rights in line with the country’s obligations under international treaties'.

Privately-run RaajjeTV has been fined four times since the law was introduced, a total of MVR 3.7 million.

The motion submitted by Vaikaradhoo MP Mohamed Nazim, to dismiss Guraidhoo constituency MP Ibrahim Riza from the Judicial Service Commission (JSC), has been placed on Monday's agenda as well.
