Former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom has welcomed the return of Ahmed Sofwan, who was declared a wanted fugitive over allegations of bribery that involved the former president as well.

Maumoon expressed his appreciation towards what he described as Sofwan’s ‘sacrifice’ and loyalty, in a post on his Twitter account.

The police announced a search for Sofwan in relation to bribery allegations in which Maumoon himself was implicated. However, details of the allegations against Sofwan has not been publicized.

Sofwan had been residing abroad since May this year, and the Home Ministry had issued a statement declaring him a ‘fugitive’ and had appealed to the Interpol for assistance in capturing him.
