Elections Commission member and spokesperson Ahmed Akram has said that Addu City’s council has requested to establish two new seats to prior to next year's parliamentary elections.
Spokesperson Akram said that the council’s appeal to create two more seats were made at a meeting to discuss the increase in population in Hithadhoo constituency. The commission has been requested to create a seat including Maradhoo and Feydhoo districts, and one more seat including Meedhoo and Hulhudhoo districts.
Akram further revealed that the commission’s board of members and senior officials of the government will be deliberating on the matter and will issue a decision within the next two weeks.
“It’s not that we do not want to add the seats. We held the discussions to talk about the increasing population of Hithadhoo district. The council proposed to add two more seats to Parliament. We will be deliberating on the matter and will announce our decision within two weeks” said Akram.
If the commission approves the proposal by Addu City’s council, the number of seats representing Addu City in Parliament will reach a total of nine, including the seven that are currently in Parliament.
Elections Commission has decided to hold the Parliamentary Election in March 2019.
