Adhaalath Party leader Sheikh Imran Abdulla has visited the family of Abdulla Rasheed, the ‘May Day’ activist that passed away in prison last year.

Sheikh Imran, who was sentenced to 12 years in prison for allegedly inciting violence at the ‘May Day’ rally, had met with Rasheed’s widow and his children.

The ‘May Day’ protest was a mass opposition rally held following the conviction of former president Mohamed Nasheed. Rasheed was accused of assault and sentenced in a trial that his family believes to have been unfair.

Rasheed was 51 years old when he passed away on October 10th last year. An official from the Maldives Correctional Services said that doctors pronounced Abdul Rasheed dead at about 10:30 am.

Shortly before his passing, Rasheed was taken to Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital after having suddenly fallen ill. The Human Rights Commission had opened an investigation over possible negligence.

Abdul Rasheed would have finished carrying out his sentence on February 18th, 2018.
