Former President Mohamed Nasheed has said that his top priority is to help establish and secure president-elect Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s government.

Nasheed, the leader of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), said this in a phone interview on RaajjeTV on Tuesday night.

Regarding the recent suspension of Nasheed’s sentence, he said that it was a great relief to know that he will not be arrested when he returns to Maldives on Thursday.

Nasheed also said that it was the best legal decision to let the Prosecutor General’s office request the Supreme Court to review his conviction instead of him filing the request himself.

Regarding the parliament motion to free him, the self-exiled opposition leader said that the parliament is where citizens have their say in political matters.

He also said that his party MDP’s unwillingness to overthrow the government is the only reason why President Abdulla Yameen has been able stay in power for the past five years.

When asked if he would vie for re-election, Nasheed’s only response was that his future work will be founded on protecting Solih’s government.
