Working to reconvene parliament sittings at the earliest possible date, says deputy speaker
It has been nearly three months since the last sitting, with the last one being held on August 1

While a no-confidence motion has been submitted against the parliament speaker, his deputy Moosa Manik has said that work is currently being done to reconvene parliament sittings.

It has been nearly three months since the last sitting, with the last one being held on August 1.

Speaking to RaajjeTV on Thursday, Manik emphasized that he is working with speaker Abdulla Maseeh Mohamed to reconvene sittings at the earliest possible date, especially as there are a number of issues related to the people.

He added that parliament sittings will be held as per procedures, and that MPs will be notified as soon as a date is confirmed.

Furthermore, the Hulhu-Henveiru constituency MP noted that the lawmakers of the Joint Opposition have requested to reconvene sittings as soon as possible.

Jumhooree Party (JP)’s deputy leader and Kinbidhoo constituency MP Abdulla Riyaz has said that Manik had assured them that a parliament sitting will be held next Monday.

Noting that lawmakers of the Joint Opposition Parliamentary Group have met with Manik to make the request, Riyaz said that the first issues on the agenda will be regarding freeing former President Mohamed Nasheed.

While Nasheed was sentenced to 13 years imprisonment over terrorism in March 2015, he has been living in exile since January 2016. A motion to free the former president was submitted to parliament on Wednesday, with 49 signatures.
