Former President Mohamed Nasheed has thanked MPs for signing a motion to facilitate his release.
The motion was submitted at parliament on Wednesday by the opposition coalition’s parliamentary group with 49 signatures.
Close associates of President Abdulla Yameen have also given their signatures.
In a tweet, Nasheed, the leader of the main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) thanked all the lawmakers who had contributed to the motion.
Nasheed has been living in the United Kingdom since receiving political asylum after fleeing a 13-year prison conviction, which human rights watchdogs have deemed unlawful.
Nasheed has announced that he will be returning to Maldives on November 1.
